From the article:
A VINTAGE display from Andrew Wilkes has helped Norths pull off the upset of the season.
The cellar dwellers fought back from a goal down in the second half to beat Wombats 3-2.
The result, along with Falcons’ surprise 4-1 beating of second placed Wodonga, has thrown the finals race open, with just three points separating the four teams chasing the last three finals spots.
Wilkes controlled the midfield, while Jordan Thorneycroft and Shaun Day marshalled the defence to have Norths ahead 1-0 at the break.
But Wombats, led by Leigh Foulston and a determined Zac Kraich, dominated the opening passages of play in the second half to take a 2-1 lead before a fightback that saw Norths control the last 15 minutes and score the winning goal.
Norths’ best were Wilkes, Jeremy Payne and Brandon Purtell upfront.
In the women’s division 1 Norths kept in touch with second place with a dominant 4-1 win over Wombats.
Ness Leggatt and the creative Emerald Beath controlled the game in the first half to have last year’s premiers ahead 2-0 at half-time.
Norths continued on in the second half, led by Brooke Purtell, adding two more goals before Wombats got a consolation in the dying stages.
Best for Norths were defender Sherren Rahaley, midfielder Leah Wilesmith and striker Nan Latta.
Belle Lowe, Eryn Norie and Emma Hooppell were best for Wombats.
Wodonga caused a big surprise in defeating Falcons 1-0.
Great work to both the Div 1 Teams!
